The HCROC held the Harvard Table Series for the 1st quarter of 2018. The talk was given by Dr. Michael Szonyi, Director of Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies & Professor of Chinese History, who shared his new book and study on “The Art of Being Governed: Soldiers and their Families in the Ming Dynasty”.
Dr. Szonyi explores the myriad ways that families fulfilled their obligations to provide a soldier to the army. The complex strategies they developed to manage their responsibilities suggest a new interpretation of an important period in China’s history as well as a broader theory of politics.
