We had the Harvard Table Series for the 2nd quarter of 2016 last night. Vice Provost Mark C. Elliott gave a speech on "The Politics of History:
The Debate on the New Qing History
" followed by a round table discussion. Vice Provost Elliott shared with the guests in his influential study of "New Qing History" in different approaches:
1. emphasis on Inner Asian dimensions of Qing rule,
2. use of non-Chinese language sources, and
3. comparative world historical context.
He also signed for every guest, in English/Chinese/Manchu, on one of his books "Emperor Qianlong: Son of Heaven, Man of the World", the Chinese translation of which was a "Reading Weekly" recommended book.
