Michael Szonyi, Professor of Chinese History & Director of Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies, spoke about the new approaches of Fairbank Center for celebrating 60 years and his book "Cold War Island" (Chinese edition was just published in Taiwan) before the HTLC Mixer last week. All the HTLC guests, including Chis Li, Nick Ackert, were also invited to the event. Michael, using a combination of traditional textual sources and fieldwork, shared many interesting stories in the small island of Quemoy in the Taiwan Strait, the front line in the military standoff between Chiang Kai-shek’s ROC and Mao Zedong’s PRC. Local society and culture were dramatically transformed during this period.
